CSV Mapping Tips to Migrate from Dropbox to SharePoint Online

It’s through accurate user mapping that your company can migrate from Dropbox to SharePoint Online successfully. Unlike migrating to OneDrive, transferring users and their shared data to SharePoint Online involves granular mapping, especially when it comes to migrating to specific libraries.

Here, we have shared a couple of tips to help you make the CSV mapping process smooth. But before that, let’s understand the benefits of choosing the CSV mapping method.

Why Choose the CSV Mapping Method?

Mapping user accounts from Dropbox to SharePoint Online (or from any source to target cloud) in CSV format is an industry standard method. It helps you team map users in Dropbox to SharePoint Online sites the way you want, using syntax.

Third-party migration tools, including our tool X-Change, populates the mapping paths from the CSV file and uses it for migrating files, folders, and metadata retrieved from Dropbox’s access endpoints.

CSV Mapping Tips

1. Use the Correct Mapping Syntaxes

Using the correct syntaxes is critical in creating accurate user mappings. For example, when adding the root folder paths, make sure to use a forward slash (/) to define the path. Similarly, use a secondary forward slash (/) to define the path of the sub folders within root folders or SharePoint Online sites.

2. Add the Folder Paths Properly

Another critical aspect of creating CSV-based user mappings is adding the folder paths in a proper way. Accurate folder paths help your team migrate from Dropbox to SharePoint Online without any conflicts or errors.

First, create sites and folders in SharePoint Online, where you will migrate the Dropbox users and folders to. Next, copy the path names of the SharePoint Online sites and the folders within them and add them to the CSV file as shown in the screenshot below:

3. Validate the CSV Mapping on Our Migration Tool

To ensure you have created the user mappings correctly, upload the CSV mapping file to our migration webapp. Click on the upload CSV button, as shown in the screenshot below, and let our tool process the CSV file.

Next, download the CSV file by clicking on the download CSV button. Open the downloaded CSV file and check for the “PASS” remark on the “Source Path Review” and “Destination Path Review” columns, as shown in the screenshot below.

These statuses indicate that the CSV mapping you have created is created and good to go for the migration.

4. Finalize the Mapping Paths

After validating the CSV file, have a meeting with your team and finalize the mapping list to see if they are true to the originally planned scope of work. Once this is out of the way, you don’t have to re-upload the CSV file, as our tool will populate the mapping data the first time around.
